The pseudostratified mucociliary epithelium in the proximal region of the lungs serves as a defensive barrier against pathogens and particulates. Culture primary airway epithelial cells in an improved serum- and bovine pituitary extract (BPE)-free medium for extended passages while retaining differentiation potential. This enables generation of large numbers of cells from early to late passages for use in respiratory biology, toxicity testing, and drug development.
